France Languedoc-Rousillon

A Guide to Perpignan

Perpignan is a town of mixed origin due to the fact that that many of the inhabitants are from Spanish ancestry. Also when Algeria obtained independence many of the French descendants living in Algeria were repatriated and so had an influence on the architecture and brought in a North African influence.

Perpignan is not necessarily known for its attractive architecture and sites but does have a vibrant street and nightlife for those that like to party. There are many restaurants and bars in the city serving a variety of culinary delights inspired by many different cultures.

There are a few sites for sight seeing in the city such as Le Castillet, which is the gate; you pass to enter the city. There is also the Palais de la Deputation, which during the 15th Century was home to the Parliament of Rousillon. The Cathedral in the town is beautiful and the interior decoration is heavily influenced by the Catalan region of Spain, especially with its altarpieces.

There is also the very successful rugby team of Perpignan based in the city which is a must visit for all sports fans as the team plays a high-tempo exhilarating brand of running rugby to keep even the first time viewer entertained to the very end.

There are a few museums in the town, which give a fascinating insight into the city and show that Perpignan is one of the major towns of the region and must be visited if you are in the area.
