A Guide to Belfort
Situated between the Vosges and the Jura Mountains. It has a huge military history and was one of the only places that held out against the Prussian forces during the Franco-Prussian and so stopped it from being absorbed into Prussia like much of Alsace and Lorraine.
The town is split in two divided by the river Savoureuse. The new town is to the west of the river and is the commercial centre of the city and to the east of the river is the Old Town, which is the much quieter and hosts some fantastic architecture. Most noticeably is Vauban’s red Chateau, which was built on the site of a medieval fort. The chateau now houses the Musee d’Art et d’Histoire displaying art from throughout history.
The town is situated in a beautiful area and perfect for exploring the region and taking long walks along the river and the Jura Mountains make the scenery even more special.
