A Guide to Viareggio

Found in the north west of Tuscany this is Tuscany’s largest seaside town. Its elegance is enhanced by the walkway of palms along the promenade. The town is internationally famous for the town's most important event of the year, the carnival, which has been compared to that of Rio, as well as for its sale of cut flowers. The most excellent architecture of Viareggio was designed by Galileo Chini, the great master of Italian Art Nouveau. This Liberty style is demonstrated by the magnificent Matilda Tower and Piazza Shelley.

The town offers a great selection of entertainment from the bathing and clubs to the famous yacht building. The number of restaurants is phenomenal and gives the town a vast culinary selection. The guided tours of Massaciuoccoli and Torre del Lago are fantastic and if you are lucky to be in Viareggio for one of the fairs, the fair of St Giuseppe, the Fair of San Annunziata, the Spring Fair and the monthly Antiques fair, they are not to be missed.
