A Guide to Pistoia
Located at the base of the Apennines it is a medieval town with a host of attractions. Its origins are Roman, but its development occurred during the medieval times and left us with the charismatic Tuscan city that we have today. Pistoia has a long history with frequently changing political control over the centuries. This has left us with a vast number of monuments to see: the series of three city walls, the Piazza del Duomo, Palazzo Pretorio, Palazzo Comunale, Palazzo Vescovile. There is also on offer the Capitolare Museum, the Forteguerriana Library, the Clemente Rospigliosi Museum, the Diocesan Museum, and the Palazzo Fabroni.
Pistoia’s collection of religious buildings include several Romanesque churches that are great attractions and include the following: the Baptistery, the Cathedral, the Church of St Bartolomeo, the Church if St Pier Maggiore, the Church of St Paolo. Surrounding the city you can find the Giardino Zoologico, the zoo which makes a perfect trip for young children, as well as the outdoor modern art collection at the Fattoria di Celle sculpture park.
