A Guide to Maremma
This plain was once the heartland of the Etruscan civilization and an ancient agricultural expanse of land. The beautiful green expanse of the Maremma countryside has since captured the hearts of nature lovers in every nation. The landscape is a jigsaw of diversity, made up of the pine forests of Marina di Alberese, the Uccelina Mountains, the river Ombrone and the Tappola marshlands.
Together these form an area of 100 square kms protected since 1975: the Tuscan Maremma Nature Reserve. The natural retreat of the Maremma is not only an attraction for those searching for an un-spoilt beauty, but also for those with historic interests. The area is scattered with ancient human settlements. Amidst the peaceful landscape one can find the watchtowers of La Trappola, Castelmarino, Collelungo, Uccellina, Molinaccio, and Cannelle, the churches of St Lorenzo and St Maria Alborensis and the fascinating convents of St Francis and St Agostino.
