A Guide to Cortona
Located in the south east of Tuscany, you find Cortona after climbing the winding road through olives and vines. The town center rests on the sharply terraced slopes of Monte Egidio. Its height allows exquisite views over Valdichiana and Lago Trasimeno to the south. Being the only town of the Valdichiana area to have survived intact after the bombings of the 2nd World War, it continues to maintain its historical traditions.
There are many art treasures to be found in Cortona, with an account of writers such as Ridolfino, Marcello and Filippo Venut and past archeolgical finds in the Etruscan Academy. The Etruscan Academy library organizes many popular events which demonstrate the towns rich cultural traditions. These include the National Furniture Show, the National Copper Fair and numerous exhibitions, conventions and performances. The traditional food of Cortona, including tripe, bruschetta, snails, frog, trout and liver are celebrated at various fairs, the Festival of Cortonese Gastronomy, the Consiglio dei Rioni, the National Chianina Cattle show.
